What affects the scope
Every tile job is different, and the independent installer who does the work sets their own price. These are the things they will usually need to know before they can estimate:
- The square footage and whether it is a ground-level slab or a raised structure
- The condition of the slab underneath, including existing cracks and how they move
- Whether the surface slopes away from the house, and whether it has to be corrected
- Whether a waterproofing or uncoupling membrane is called for under the tile
- The tile itself, since exterior use is about water absorption and slip resistance
- What comes off first, and why the last surface failed

Why does outdoor tile pop loose in Utah?
Freeze-thaw, almost always. Water gets into the tile, the grout, or the mortar bed, freezes, expands, and breaks the bond, and our winters cycle through that repeatedly. The fixes are all about keeping water out and letting it drain: low-absorption tile, exterior-rated setting materials, real slope, and a membrane where the assembly calls for one.
Can interior tile be used outside?
It should not be. Interior tile is often more absorbent and is rated for slip resistance in a dry room, neither of which survives a Utah winter or a wet porch. The tile needs to be specified for exterior use, and that is worth confirming before it is ordered rather than after.
Can tile go over an existing concrete patio?
Often yes, and it is the common case, but the slab decides. It needs to be sound, sloped away from the house, and free of cracks that are still moving, because a crack in the slab will telegraph through the tile unless it is isolated. That gets assessed on site.
