What affects the scope
Every tile job is different, and the independent installer who does the work sets their own price. These are the things they will usually need to know before they can estimate:
- The square footage and whether it is a ground-level slab or a raised structure
- The condition of the slab underneath, including existing cracks and how they move
- Whether the surface slopes away from the house, and whether it has to be corrected
- Whether a waterproofing or uncoupling membrane is called for under the tile
- The tile itself, since exterior use is about water absorption and slip resistance
- What comes off first, and why the last surface failed
Worth asking any installer directly: are you licensed and insured for this work, what waterproofing system do you use, what is your estimate and what does it include, when could you start, and what happens if something is not right afterwards? In this housing stock it is usually one of three things, and often all three. Interior tile was used outside, so it absorbs water and the water freezes inside it. Interior thinset and interior grout were used, which do not survive that cycle. And the old surface was tiled over rather than stripped, so the bond was never to sound concrete in the first place. The repair is not a patch: the failed tile and everything under it comes off, the slab gets assessed, and the assembly is rebuilt with exterior rated materials and a slope that drains away from the house.
