Old tile has to come up without wrecking the subfloor, thinset has to be ground back flat, and a floor that dips or flexes has to be corrected before anything is set on it. What affects the scope
Every tile job is different, and the independent installer who does the work sets their own price. These are the things they will usually need to know before they can estimate:
- The square footage coming out and what it is bonded to
- Whether the old tile sits on a slab or on a wood subfloor, which are different removals
- How much thinset is left behind and how hard it is to grind back
- Whether the floor is flat enough or needs leveling before the new surface
- Whether backer board, membrane, or both are called for underneath

Why is removing tile from a slab harder than from wood?
Because there is nothing to give. On a wood subfloor the tile and backer board can often come up together in sections. On a slab the thinset is bonded to concrete and has to be broken and ground off, which is slower, louder, and dustier.
How much dust does tile removal make?
A great deal, and it travels. Containment, plastic at the doorways, and dust extraction on the grinders are the difference between a contained job and finding grit in the house for weeks. It is a fair thing to ask any installer how they handle it.
Does a floor always need leveling before new tile?
Not always, but it needs checking every time, and large-format tile raises the bar because it cannot follow a dip. Whether the fix is grinding the high spots or pouring a leveler over the low ones is a decision made once the old floor is off.
