What affects the scope
Every tile job is different, and the independent installer who does the work sets their own price. These are the things they will usually need to know before they can estimate:

How much does a kitchen backsplash cost in Taylorsville?

Does the old backsplash have to come off?
Usually yes. Tiling over an existing backsplash pushes the new surface out past the outlets and the cabinet returns, and it depends on the old tile being perfectly sound. Taking it off gives a flat substrate to work on, but it can pull drywall paper with it, which is part of what the installer looks at.
How long does a backsplash take?
Most are a short job rather than a long one, but it is not a single visit: the tile is set, then the grout goes in after the mortar has cured. Kitchens are usable in between, with the range wall out of service for part of it.
Is a glass or mosaic backsplash harder to install?
They are different rather than simply harder. Mosaic sheets have to be aligned so the joints between sheets disappear, and glass shows the mortar behind it, so coverage and trowel work have to be clean. Both are ordinary work for an installer who does them regularly.
