What affects the scope
Every tile job is different, and the independent installer who does the work sets their own price. These are the things they will usually need to know before they can estimate:
- The heated square footage, which is the usable floor and not the whole room
- Whether the system is a prefabricated mat or loose cable set by hand
- How the element is covered, since a mortar bed and a self-leveler are different work
- Where the thermostat goes and how far the floor sensor has to run
- Whether the existing floor is coming out first
- Whether the room is being fully retiled or only the floor is changing
Worth asking any installer directly: are you licensed and insured for this work, what waterproofing system do you use, what is your estimate and what does it include, when could you start, and what happens if something is not right afterwards? It changes the front of the job more than the heating itself. An element cannot be embedded over sheet vinyl, old adhesive, or a floating layer, so the stack comes off and the original boards get inspected, refastened, and covered with a proper underlayment. That is also where rot around an old toilet flange or a long past leak turns up, which is better found before the element than after. The upside is that removing those layers buys back most of the height the heated assembly is about to add.
