What affects the scope
Every tile job is different, and the independent installer who does the work sets their own price. These are the things they will usually need to know before they can estimate:
- How much of the wall is being covered, from a simple surround to floor to ceiling
- What is on the face now, since brick, stone, and old tile each demolish differently
- The clearances the appliance manufacturer requires around the opening
- Whether a mantel is staying, coming off, or being reset
- The tile format, because ledger panel, slab, and small tile are different labor
- Whether the wall behind needs to be rebuilt once the old face is off
Worth asking any installer directly: are you licensed and insured for this work, what waterproofing system do you use, what is your estimate and what does it include, when could you start, and what happens if something is not right afterwards? Does the mantel have to come off to retile a surround in an older South Salt Lake house?
Often yes, and it is usually better that way. Tiling up to a mantel that was set out of level locks that error into every course above it, and cutting tile to follow a crooked underside looks exactly like what it is. Taking the mantel off also shows how it is anchored, which matters because a combustible mantel has a required distance from the opening set by the appliance manufacturer. It goes back on after the tile, shimmed level to the new face.
