South Salt Lake homes are small, old, and close in, and many have been renovated more than once, sometimes as a rental and sometimes on the way back out of being one. Around the Granary District and east toward 700 East it is normal to open a bathroom and find three eras stacked: original tile over mortar, sheet vinyl glued to it, and a laminate floor floated over that. Each layer changes the height at the door and the height at the drain, so the demolition writes the plan rather than the other way around.

What affects the scope

Every tile job is different, and the independent installer who does the work sets their own price. These are the things they will usually need to know before they can estimate:

  • The size of the shower and how much of it is tile rather than glass
  • Whether the old shower has to come out first, and what is found behind it
  • The tile itself: large format, mosaic, and natural stone are not the same job
  • Whether the pan is built on site or set as a preformed base
  • Niches, benches, and curbless entries, each of which changes the waterproofing detail
  • Whether a plumber has to move a drain or valve before tile work can start

Worth asking any installer directly: are you licensed and insured for this work, what waterproofing system do you use, what is your estimate and what does it include, when could you start, and what happens if something is not right afterwards? Scope and licensing: Moving a drain, a valve, or a supply line is licensed plumbing work in Utah and is not part of a tile installer's scope. How much does a tile shower cost in South Salt Lake?

What usually turns up under the floor of a South Salt Lake bathroom?

Layers. Old sheet vinyl, mastic, particle board underlayment, and sometimes original hex tile in a mortar bed, all still there because each remodel covered the last one. The stack matters because the finished shower floor has to meet the bathroom floor at a workable height and the drain sits where it sits. The installer usually pulls it back to the subfloor, checks the joists for old water damage near the toilet flange, and rebuilds from a known surface.
