West Jordan turns up a lot of grout that cracked in a straight line a year or two after the floor went in. That is almost never the grout. In the subdivisions toward Bangerter and 7800 South the framing is still drying and settling through its early years, and any movement in the subfloor telegraphs straight up through a rigid mortar bed. Why did the grout crack in a West Jordan house that is only a few years old?
A crack that runs in a long straight line, often over a joist or along a seam in the subfloor, is a movement crack, not a mixing problem. Newer framing loses moisture and settles for the first few seasons, and tile bonded rigidly to that subfloor has nowhere to put the stress except the grout joints. Repointing the grout without addressing the movement just moves the crack. An uncoupling membrane between the subfloor and the tile is the usual answer, and it has to be there from the start.
